Shabab Oman

The Ship’s Specifications

Shabab Oman was built of Scottish oak wood, while the deck panels were made of pine wood from Uruguay. Her original colour was black. Some of Her key characteristics were a total length of 52 metres, a beam of 8.5 metres, and a draught of 4.5 metres. She had 15 sails with a total sail area of 840 square feet divided into different types, each with a particular use.

Achievements And Awards

Shabab Oman quickly became a regular participant in international maritime festivals, where She received numerous invitations from various countries to participate in other festivals. A number of world leaders, including royalty and presidents, visited the vessel and many awards and international friendship prizes were bestowed on Her during service as per indicated below:

Sailing and Adventure courses

Shabab Oman conducted sailing and adventure courses for young people with a normal age limit of 25 for participants. Each course usually lasts for three weeks, except for foreign deployments where courses could last for three months or more. The aim of such courses was to establish team work, develop leadership skills and navigation principles and improve self-confidence whilst learning to live in a maritime environment. Physical fitness was essential to gain acceptance to the course and the trainees also received a training programme includes lectures on safety principles, such as the use of ropes and the necessary actions to be taken in bad weather. Mast climbing was carried out under the direct supervision of a crew member either while the vessel was berthed in harbor or during sailing. Shabab Oman conducted many such courses during her service in RNO.
